How to save PDF pages as images

Sometimes a PDF is the wrong format: a form wants a picture, a chat app won't preview it, or you need one page for a presentation. Converting each page to an image takes a few seconds, and the file does not need to go to a server.

When you need images instead of a PDF

  • A form accepts only JPG or PNG.
  • You want one page as a picture in a slide or a document.
  • A messaging app shows images inline but not PDFs.
  • You need to attach a page as a screenshot-like image.

How it works

The tool draws each page of the PDF onto a canvas in your browser, then saves the result as a JPG or PNG. A document of five pages gives five images, and you can download them one by one or all as a ZIP. Nothing is uploaded: the PDF stays on your device.

JPG or PNG?

  • JPG is smaller and best for pages that contain photographs.
  • PNG keeps text and lines crisp and has no compression artefacts, but files are larger.

For typical text documents, either works. If the images will be sent by email or uploaded to a form with a size limit, start with JPG.

About resolution

You can pick the resolution: 72 dpi (screen), 150 dpi (standard, the default) or 300 dpi (print). At 150 dpi an A4 page comes out at roughly 1240 × 1754 pixels, comfortable to read on a screen. Choose 300 dpi to print the pages or to read small text, and expect much larger files.

Scanned PDFs

A scanned PDF is already a set of images, one per page. Converting it gives you those pictures back, at the quality of the scan. If the result is too large for a form, follow it with Reduce to an exact size.

Resolution

150 dpi is sharp on any screen and keeps files small. Choose 300 dpi to print the pages or read small text.

90 is a good balance of sharpness and file size.

Frequently asked questions

Is the quality of the images the same as the PDF?

The default is 150 dpi, which is sharp on any screen. You can choose 72 dpi for smaller files or 300 dpi for printing and small text. Photos inside a scan can't gain detail beyond their own resolution.

JPG or PNG for PDF pages?

JPG for pages with photos and for smaller files. PNG for pages with text and line art where you want edges sharp, and when you need to avoid compression artefacts.

Can I convert a password-protected PDF?

Not if it needs a password to open. Remove the protection in the program that created it first.

Is there a page limit?

There is no fixed limit. Large documents take longer and use more memory, so convert them in parts if your device is slow.
