How to convert PNG to ICO
Choose the sizes
16, 32 and 48 pixels for a favicon; add 256 for a Windows icon.
Add your image
A square PNG with a transparent background works best. Other shapes are fitted or cropped to a square.
Download the ICO
One .ico file per image, ready to use.
Made on your device
The icon is built by your own browser: the image is resized and packed into the ICO file locally. Nothing is uploaded, and photo details such as the location never go into the icon.
How to use the ICO file
An ICO file is a small container that holds the same icon in several sizes, so each place that shows it can pick the sharpest one. Browsers use it as the favicon in tabs and bookmarks; Windows uses it for programs, shortcuts and folders.
Adding a favicon to your website
Name the file favicon.ico and put it in the main folder of your website – browsers look for it there automatically. You can also point to it in the head of your pages:
<link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico" sizes="any">
| Size | Where it is used |
|---|---|
| 16 px | Browser tabs and bookmarks |
| 32 px | Tabs on high-resolution screens, the taskbar |
| 48 px | Windows shortcuts and folders |
| 256 px | Large Windows desktop icons |

Frequently asked questions
Which sizes does a favicon need?
Browsers show favicons at 16 and 32 pixels, and Windows uses 48 for shortcuts. One ICO with 16, 32 and 48 covers all of them. Phones prefer a separate PNG icon of 180 or 192 pixels.
Is transparency kept?
Yes. Every size is stored as a PNG inside the icon, with full transparency.
What if my image isn't square?
Choose "Fit, with transparent edges" to keep the whole image, or "Crop to a square" to cut out the middle part.
Will a small image look blurry?
An icon needs exactly the sizes you choose, so a small image is scaled up for the larger ones. Start from an image at least as large as the biggest size – 256 pixels for Windows icons.
Does it work with JPG photos?
Yes, any image works. JPG has no transparency, so the background of a photo stays as it is.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser.
