How to convert AVIF to JPG

  1. Add AVIF files

Drag them onto the box, choose them with the button or paste an image.

  2. Choose the quality

Quality 90 suits almost everything. Pick a lower value for smaller files.

  3. Download the JPGs

One at a time or all in a single ZIP file.

Decoded by your own browser

Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari can all read AVIF, so KeepPixels uses the decoder that is already built into your browser. Your images are never uploaded and the conversion works offline once the page is open.

What AVIF is and why it's hard to open

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) was released in 2019 by the Alliance for Open Media, the group behind the royalty-free AV1 video codec. At the same quality an AVIF is usually noticeably smaller than a WEBP and much smaller than a JPG, which is why image services and large websites increasingly deliver pictures as AVIF.

Where you’ll meet AVIF

  • Images saved from websites and online shops.
  • Pictures exported from newer design and photo apps.
  • Files shared by people whose tools default to the most efficient format.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I open AVIF files on my computer?

AVIF is newer than JPG and WEBP. Older image viewers and editors don't support it, and on Windows the Photos app needs the free AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store. Converting to JPG avoids all of that.

Will the JPG be bigger than the AVIF?

Usually yes – AVIF is one of the most efficient image formats. A JPG at quality 90 is often two to four times the size, but it opens everywhere.

What happens to HDR AVIF images?

They are converted to a standard (SDR) JPG. Bright highlights may look a little less intense than on an HDR screen.

What happens to transparency?

JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas become white.

Which browsers can convert AVIF here?

Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari (16.4 or later). On a very old browser you'll see a clear message instead of a broken result.

Are my images uploaded?

No. All processing happens on your device.
